NORMAN, Okla. — Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel secured a win in his return to Oklahoma, where he once led the Sooners to a national title as quarterback in 2000 and was later dismissed as offensive coordinator in 2014. Freshman Nico Iamaleava threw for 194 yards to help the No. 6 Volunteers defeat No. 15 Oklahoma 25-15 on Saturday night.
After the game, Iamaleava presented the game ball to Heupel, marking an emotional moment in his homecoming.
Dylan Sampson contributed 92 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Dont'e Thornton Jr. caught a 66-yard touchdown pass. Bru McCoy also chipped in with four receptions for 92 yards.
Tennessee (4-0, 1-0 SEC) dominated the Sooners in their first SEC matchup, holding them to just 222 total yards.
For Oklahoma (3-1, 0-1 SEC), Jovantae Barnes scored both a rushing and a receiving touchdown. Backup quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. passed for 132 yards after starter Jackson Arnold was benched following a rough start, throwing for just 54 yards with an interception.
The game saw several key moments, including a gruesome leg injury to Oklahoma defensive back Kendel Dolby in the second quarter. Oklahoma also struggled with turnovers, fumbling twice after recovering Iamaleava’s fumbles, only to give the ball back to Tennessee on the very next play.
Tennessee's defense was relentless, forcing Oklahoma into negative-20 yards in the second quarter alone, helping the Volunteers build a 19-3 halftime lead.
Takeaways:
Tennessee: Despite injuries to offensive tackles Lance Heard and John Campbell Jr., the Vols’ offense managed enough production to win. While they didn't match their explosive early-season numbers (63.7 points per game), they executed when needed.
Oklahoma: The Sooners’ offense struggled to handle Tennessee's pressure, with quarterbacks under constant duress. Injuries to key players like receiver Nic Anderson and running back Taylor Tatum compounded their issues throughout the game.
